A new leaf…

With the new gallery up and running, the next step in my plan is to shift the focus of the blog portion of the site. Instead of posting full shoot results, I’m going to make it, well, more bloggy. That will mean:

blabbing about photography
tutorials
“featured image” posts, where I can talk a bit more […]

The gallery is up and running!

http://alexwilsonphoto.com/gallery2007/
So far, I did a quick pass to add some favourites from the past year — right now there’s just under 400 images up, but I’ll be adding much more to that from the archives over the next few days.
Feedback is welcome, send me an email or post a comment. I sort of expect […]

Gallery browsing (part 2)

So. very. close.
The interface is just getting some final tweaks and I’ve already started adding older images. The matching algorithms already appear to be working better than expected.
I fully expect it to be up and running this week.
The gallery, when showing you an image, will give you two sets of thumbnails you can use. […]

Gallery browsing

The new gallery for alexwilsonphoto.com is very close. The technological guts are nearly done, the interface tweaks are underway, and then it’s just a matter of adding images. I’m really excited about what the web gallery will be like.

Using local contrast in Photoshop

The human brain is quite adept at seeing contrast within small details, but it is unable to detect small (and sometimes sizable) changes in contrast on a larger scale. Great painters have known this known this for centuries and been able to produce works that appear to have great contrast by exploiting these limitations.
Photographers […]

The “digital editing” debate

Ah, the digital editing debate. It always pops up: “To Photoshop” or “not to Photoshop”. Or “using Photoshop isn’t real photography”.
Quoting Ansel Adams when talking about photography is kind of cliché, but bear with me…

I have often thought that if photography were difficult in the true sense of the term — meaning that […]

That Figures! show in London, Ontario

I’ll be showing work at the That Figures! show in London. For those in the area, please come by, and it would be great to see you at the reception.

New layout…

I’ve activated the new theme for the site. I’m still tracking down various nit-picks in the display, and have numerous tweaks in mind (colours, especially the link colours), so bear with me for the next few days. If you see anything horribly broken that doesn’t get fixed right away, please let me know.
I […]

Lacunal: Volume 2 (very early preview)

The second book in my published monograph series will be centered around the theme of “motion”.
I’ve been lucky enough to work with some amazing models and dancers, and already have built up great selection of images. I hope to be adding a few more shoots over January and February, and then doing final image […]

December update

My wife and I were pleased beyond words with the birth of our daughter at the beginning of November. I’ve been taking a break from the studio for the last month, and it will probably be a little while before I ease back into some shooting. There’s no new shoots from November for […]
